India resuming the 1st day total of 307/5 against the New Zealand, Cheteshwar Pujara’s 159 end his innings. It was the highlight of the Indian innings, and Indian captain MS Dhoni marked his 20th half-century as captain. We should appreciate Pujara and Dhoni's (73) efforts, and also Ashwin (37) contribution. Finally India posts 438 runs on the board in their 1st innings.

Kiwis batting order collapsed by the spin attack of Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha and were scored 106/5 at the end of 2nd day of the 1st test.

Let we see some interesting statistical highlights of day 2 of 1st test India v New Zealand:

Cheteshwar Pujara’s (159) runs is the 2nd highest by any Indian batsman in his 1st innings against New Zealand, next to Polly Umrigar’s 223 at Hyderabad LBS in 1955-56.

Cheteshwar Pujara' 159 is the 5th highest score by a No.3 Indian batsman v New Zealand. And also the 16th time an Indian has reached 150 against NZ.

The previous record of ten 150-plus knocks by Indian batsmen, nine have come in home Tests with Sachin Tendulkar scoring the only away one.

The 127-run partnership between MS Dhoni and Pujara is the 3rd highest sixth-wicket partnership for India against NZ. MS Dhoni involve in 3 of the top 5 stands.

No.3 & No.5 positions 217 runs - the second-highest in a single innings by India since the start of 2005.

Out of Cheteshwar Pujara’s 15 hundreds in first-class cricket, eight scores are in excess of 150, including one triple hundred and two double hundreds.

MS Dhoni (73) registered his 20th score of 50 or more as captain. Only Sunil Gavaskar (25) is for India.

Zaheer Khan out is his 26th duck in Test cricket and also his 5th against New Zealand ahead of Paul Wiseman’s tally of four. He leveled this record of Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan and Bangladesh’s Mohammad Ashraful, who have also got five ducks against the NZ.

By the by, Zaheer’s 26 ducks are the most by an Indian batsman in Test cricket. Only five batsmen have recorded more ducks in Test cricket – Courtney Walsh (43), Glenn McGrath (35), Shane Warne (34), Muttiah Muralitharan (33) and Chris Martin (33). Curtly Ambrose (26) and Mervyn Dillon (26).

This was Zaheer’s 10th duck on Home. Bishan Singh Bedi, Bhagwat Chandrasekhar, Mohinder Amarnath, Javagal Srinath and Harbhajan Singh, who have aggregated nine ducks each on Indian soil.

R Ashwin has now having record of scored more than 300 runs and taken more than 30 wickets in his seven Tests. He is the quickest Indian to do so. The previous record was Salim Durrani reach this record in nine Tests.

India has never lost a Test match against any opponent after posting 425-plus runs in 1st innings of a Test.
